Futaba GP1212A02
2011 -
02.19
The Futaba GP1212A02 display is a quite interesting new display by Futaba. It offers three communication interfaces (RS232, USB and TWI/I²C) to drive the 16384 dots organized in 256×64. The feature list is amazing and sadly most of the opportunities offered by the smart controller can’t be utilized by a LCDHype driver. But nevertheless I created one to get LCDHype in touch with the future of smart VFDs
.
The displays can be ordered e.g. on rs-online.com (german site item link).

Hi Slion,
what do you mean? The datasheet describes all parameters of the interfaces and the commands are also documented. This is the “API” what the display offers to you. There some differences according to the chosen interface, but the command set is equal. The offered driver uses RS232 or USB interface to connect to the display module. An USB driver is not needed for Windows or Linux, as it will register as a HIDevice.

What about API and drivers?
Hi Slion,
I am not a modder, just more a programmer. So I haven’t tried to install it anywhere. But the size is definitely to big to fit in a 5.25″ drive bay. The PCB is wider than the bay slots. Maybe take a look at the datasheet and especially the given sizes. The datasheet can be found at rs-online.com. Search for the VFD using “GP1212A02″ and download it from the product details page. I have not ordered the VFD by myself, so I cannot say if it is delivered with a datasheet. But comparing to many other companies, I would say it is not, as the companies are trying to save money and prefer the digital delivery of content.

Hey,
Did you manage to fit that VFD into a 5.25 drive bay?
I could not find any driver or API on the Futuba website.
Are those provided with the display itself?
Cheers,
S.
Hi Thijs,
I don’t know yet. I will try to get the datasheet for the Futaba GP1212A01.

Can this driver also be used for the GP1212A01?
